"Managed WordPress" is a phrase the industry has diluted into near-meaninglessness. It now covers everything from a shared cPanel box with automatic updates toggled on, to the actual thing: a complete operating environment where every layer is handled, monitored and owned by someone who understands what WordPress requires to run properly.
This page is the actual thing. Not a promise to handle problems when they surface. A complete provision - domain to delivery, inbox to infrastructure - so that WordPress is simply a tool you use, not a responsibility you carry.
Your Foundation.
"The basics, done properly."
One .com Domain - Yours, For Life
IncludedOne .com domain is registered and renewed free of charge for the duration of your engagement. We manage it across either of Porkbun or Cloudflare - two registrars chosen for their clean interfaces, transparent pricing, reliability and an absence of dark-pattern renewal games. If you ever move on, the domain transfers to you in full. No conditions, no ransom.
SSL/TLS Certificate - Provisioned & Auto-Renewed
IncludedYour site runs on HTTPS from day one. SSL certificates are provisioned, installed and renewed automatically - managed at both the edge and the server level. No expiry warnings, no lapsed padlock, no browser security alerts scaring visitors away.
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and its modern successor TLS (Transport Layer Security) are encryption protocols that secure the connection between a visitor's browser and your website. In practice the terms are used interchangeably - when someone says "SSL certificate," they almost always mean a TLS certificate.
When SSL/TLS is active, your site address begins with https:// and a padlock appears in the browser. This tells visitors that data exchanged with your site - form submissions, login credentials, payment details - is encrypted in transit and cannot be read or intercepted by a third party.
Why it matters beyond security: Google uses HTTPS as a ranking signal. Browsers display a visible "Not Secure" warning on any page without it - especially damaging on contact forms and checkout pages. An expired or misconfigured certificate triggers the same warning. Both scenarios cost you visitors before they read a single word.
Enterprise SMTP - Monthly Quota Included
IncludedA fair monthly quota of premium transactional email is included, delivered via Postmark - an enterprise-grade provider trusted by millions of businesses for mission-critical delivery. Your receipts, notifications, password resets and form confirmations arrive in inboxes, not spam folders.
Transactional emails are automated messages triggered by a specific action a visitor takes - a purchase receipt, a form confirmation, a password reset link, a shipping update, a new account welcome. One action, one email, sent immediately.
Traditional email - your Gmail, Outlook, or business inbox - is designed for human-to-human conversation: composing, reading, replying. It was never built for high-volume automation. Sending automated messages through it will land you in spam, or get your domain blacklisted by the major providers.
Why it matters for your site: when someone fills in your contact form or completes a purchase, WordPress needs to send them a confirmation. If that goes through a standard mailbox - or worse, through the server's own mail system - it often ends up in junk, or disappears entirely. A dedicated transactional provider like Postmark or SendGrid ensures it arrives, every time, with full delivery reporting and a domain reputation you can trust.
Professional Email Inbox - Set Up & Managed
Included
A professional mailbox on your own domain is set up and fully managed. Default provision is via Titan Email - a reliable business email provider with clean webmail, full IMAP/SMTP access and mobile apps for both iOS & android.
Already using Gmail Workspace, Microsoft 365, Hey or another provider? We configure the DNS routing, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records at no extra charge. You pay for that service directly at their rate; we handle the setup and ongoing management for you.
The Infrastructure.
"Turnkey from the first login."
WordPress - Fully Operational, Zero Maintenance Burden
You get a running WordPress installation. That description should be sufficient - but the industry has trained people to expect caveats. There are none here. No server to SSH into. No cPanel or Plesk dashboard to navigate. No backup routine to schedule and periodically panic about. No update window to babysit. No "the PHP version needs to be changed manually" conversation.
WordPress is a tool for publishing and running a business. It should feel like one. You write, publish, sell, and communicate. Everything beneath that is managed.
Caching - Three Layers, Always Active
Layer 1
Object Cache
Database query results are stored in memory (Memcached), so repeat requests never hit the database. Dramatically reduces server load and time-to-first-byte for authenticated users and dynamic pages that a page cache cannot serve.
Layer 2
Server Cache
Layer 3
Edge Cache
Static assets and pages are distributed across 260+ global edge locations via CDN. Content is served from the node geographically closest to each visitor - reducing latency and absorbing traffic spikes before they reach the origin server.
Security.
"Every layer active from day one."
Security on the SmartBirb Cloud is not just a plugin you activate or a scan you schedule. It is the architecture - multiple independent layers, each covering a different attack vector, each active automatically and continuously from the moment your site goes live.
Web Application Firewall
Enterprise NGINX ModSecurity with custom WordPress-specific rulesets. Blocks SQL injection, XSS, and known exploit patterns before they reach WordPress. Rules updated continuously against emerging threats - not quarterly.
Real-Time DDoS Mitigation
Automatically identifies and neutralises volumetric attacks as they happen - absorbing traffic floods that would take unprotected sites offline within minutes. No manual intervention required.
WordPress-Specific Protection
Rules written specifically for WordPress attack patterns - credential stuffing on wp-login, xmlrpc abuse, plugin-specific exploits. Generic server protection misses these. A firewall tuned for WordPress does not.
AI Spam Blocking - Akismet
Enterprise Akismet stops spam comments and form submissions at 99.99% accuracy. Over 500 billion spam messages blocked across millions of sites - one of the largest trained spam models in existence, included at no cost.
Edge Cache Defensive Mode
During severe attacks, Defensive Mode can be activated for 30 minutes to 7 days. It deploys proof-of-work challenges at the edge - separating real visitors from bots and blocking 99% of automated attacks while legitimate customers continue browsing without disruption.
Infrastructure-level security is one layer. The deployment architecture adds another. See The Dry Dock Stack →
Performance.
"Built fast. Stays fast."
Advanced Edge Caching - 260+ Global Locations
Multi-layer caching with WordPress-specific optimisations, served from the edge node closest to each visitor. International visitors get the same load time as local ones. Faster pages rank higher in search and convert at measurably better rates.
Auto-Scaling - Up to 110+ PHP Workers
When traffic spikes - a product launch, a press mention, Black Friday, a viral post - PHP workers scale automatically to meet demand. You never lose customers because your host couldn't keep up. No manual upgrades, no advance notice required.
SSD NVMe Storage
Enterprise-grade NVMe delivers up to 100× faster read/write speeds than conventional hosting storage. Database queries, file access, and WordPress bootstrap all benefit - the performance floor is higher before any application-level optimisation begins.
WordPress-Tuned Server Stack
PHP and MySQL are configured specifically for the way WordPress makes requests - not generic web server defaults. Persistent connections, OPcache, and query optimisation tuned for WordPress's actual execution patterns.
Real-Time Performance Monitoring
Infrastructure health is checked every 10 seconds. Bottlenecks are identified and resolved before they affect visitors - not after a complaint arrives. Detailed analytics available on request.
Edge Image Transformation - On-Demand, No Storage Overhead
The SmartBirb Cloud CDN includes a native image transformation service - active by default, no plugin required. Images from your uploads directory can be resized, cropped, and fitted to exact dimensions at the point of request. The result is cached at the edge and served from there on every subsequent request. No duplicate files are written to disk, no storage overhead accumulates, and visitors always receive an image sized for the context it is displayed in - not a 3,000px original scaled down in the browser.
WordPress Management.
"Not a cron job. An actual process."
WordPress updates are deceptively complex. Four interdependent layers - core, themes, plugins, database - must work in harmony. One deprecated function, one incompatible plugin, one untested dependency: an instant downtime. Most hosts push updates and hope nothing breaks. We test before we ship.
WordPress Core Updates
Automated & managed
Core is deployed as a fresh artifact on every refit - not patched in-place. Critical security patches ship within 24–48 hours of release. Core files are never writeable on the server: they cannot be modified, corrupted, or used as an entry point for injection.
Plugin & Theme Updates
Tested, then shipped
Updates are staged and validated before they touch your live site. That e-commerce plugin update that silently breaks your checkout? We find that in staging, not in production - and not from a customer email.
Staging Environment
Always available
A staging copy of your site is maintained as a standard part of the stack - not an upgrade, not an add-on. Test a new plugin, review a design change, or validate a content migration without touching the live environment.
Instant Rollback
Minutes, not hours
If something breaks - which the staging process is designed to prevent - rollback to any prior git commit takes minutes. Not "restore from last night's backup." A precise revert to the exact prior state, with full audit trail of what changed.
Version Control
Every change committed
Every version change - core, plugin, theme - is committed to git before it ships. Complete, timestamped audit trail. "We don't know what changed" is never an acceptable answer during an incident.
PHP Version Management
Current & patched
PHP is actively managed - updated to supported releases, tested for compatibility with your specific plugin stack, and kept current with security patches. You will never receive a "your PHP version is end-of-life" warning from a scanner.
Search & Visibility.
"Configured from day one - not left as homework."
Most managed WordPress services hand you a fresh install and leave search engine configuration as an exercise for the reader. Here, your site is discoverable from the moment it launches - robots directives, sitemap, and SEO tooling are set up and connected before you publish your first page.
Robots.txt - Configured & Maintained
IncludedYour robots.txt is properly configured so search engines know what to crawl and what to leave alone - not the WordPress default that lets everything through indiscriminately. Adjusted as your site evolves: new sections, staging paths, admin areas, and feed endpoints are handled so crawlers spend their budget on the pages that matter.
robots.txt is a plain text file that lives at the root of your website (e.g. yoursite.com/robots.txt). When a search engine crawler - Googlebot, Bingbot, or any other - visits your site, the very first thing it reads is this file. The file tells it which parts of the site it is allowed to crawl and index, and which parts to skip.
Why it matters: search engine crawlers have a limited budget of requests they will make to your site per visit. If that budget is wasted on admin pages, login screens, duplicate tag archives, staging paths, and internal search results, less of it is spent indexing the pages you actually want to rank - your content, your services, your landing pages.
What can go wrong without it: WordPress installations ship with a default robots.txt that is permissive by design. Left unconfigured, crawlers will happily index your wp-admin login page, your author archive pages, your internal search results, and any staging subdomain that happens to be publicly accessible - none of which should ever appear in a search engine's index.
XML Sitemap - Auto-Generated & Submitted
IncludedA complete XML sitemap is generated automatically via Google XML Sitemaps and kept current as you publish. Every new page, post, or change is reflected without manual action. The sitemap is submitted to Google Search Console so new content is discovered and indexed promptly - not whenever a crawler happens to visit.
An XML sitemap is a structured file that lists every page, post, and URL on your website that you want search engines to know about. Think of it as a map handed directly to Googlebot - rather than making it discover your content by following links, you tell it exactly what exists, where it lives, and when it was last updated.
robots.txt vs sitemap - they work together: robots.txt tells crawlers what not to visit. The sitemap tells them what to visit. Used in combination, you give search engines a precise crawl path - blocking noise and surfacing content - rather than leaving them to wander.
Why submission to Search Console matters: a sitemap on your server is useful, but a sitemap submitted to Google Search Console is actionable. Google acknowledges receipt, reports how many URLs it has indexed versus how many are in the sitemap, and flags any URLs it cannot crawl or index. It turns an invisible file into a live diagnostic - you can see whether Google has actually found and processed your content.
SEO Tooling - Your Choice, Installed & Configured
IncludedSEOPress Premium is available at no additional cost on request - a full-featured SEO suite covering meta tags, Open Graph, structured data, redirections, and content analysis. Prefer Yoast? The free edition of Yoast SEO is installed instead. Either way: the plugin is configured, connected to Google Search Console, and ready to use from day one. You choose the tool. We handle the setup.
Reliability & Scale.
"Less than five minutes of downtime per year."
Uptime Guarantee
99.999%
That is less than five minutes of downtime per year. Not per month. Per year.
Traffic Bursting
When traffic exceeds your base allocation - a product launch, a press mention, a viral post - the SmartBirb Cloud bursts automatically to additional CPU and RAM. Sites on this infrastructure handle 15M+ visitors per month. Your launch does not become an outage.
Automated Failover
Your site runs with a live replica at a geographically separate data centre. If the primary fails - hardware, human error, fire at the facility - traffic routes to the replica in seconds. No manual intervention. Incidents at data centres happen globally. Your site stays online regardless.
Real-Time Data Synchronisation
Database and content are synchronised across data centres continuously. If failover is triggered, zero data is lost. No customer orders disappear into the gap between the last backup and the outage.
Intelligent DNS Routing
Smart DNS management routes traffic to healthy servers automatically. No propagation delays during failover. Visitors experience a seamless response - the failover event is infrastructure-level, invisible at the browser.
Backups.
"You will never lose your site."
Backup anxiety - the low-grade dread that asks "when was this last backed up, and does that backup actually restore?" - is one of the most common side-effects of unmanaged hosting. It ends here.
Automated Filesystem & Database Backups - On a Real Schedule
Filesystem and database are backed up on separate schedules, run on the replica server - backup operations impose zero load on your live site.
Filesystem
Daily
Last 7 days retained in full. Beyond 7 days, one snapshot per week is kept for up to 30 days.
Database
Hourly - change-triggered
Backups run as changes are detected, not on a fixed clock. A snapshot exists close to any moment of activity. Retained for 30 days.
Backups are retained for 30 days. The weekly rollup model means you can reach back further than a week without losing resolution on recent activity.
Live Replica at a Separate Data Centre
Every site hosted on the SmartBirb Cloud has a live redundant copy running at a geographically separate facility. This is not a snapshot. It is a continuously synchronised replica. If the primary data centre experiences a prolonged outage, the replica is promoted to primary automatically.
UpdraftPlus Premium - Included
If you ever want a backup in your own hands - to test a local copy, migrate to a different provider, or simply for peace of mind - UpdraftPlus Premium is included at no charge. Schedule exports to your own Google Drive, Dropbox, or S3 bucket whenever you like.
Backup on Request - Just Ask
At any time, you can email us and receive a complete export of your site: database, plugins, themes, and the full uploads folder. No ticket system, no queue, no support tier gating. A reply with your backup.
Already Live Somewhere Else?
We move the site. You don't.
If your WordPress site is already running on another host, migration is included in the charter. We handle the full transfer - files, database, DNS cutover, SSL provisioning - with a zero-downtime window. You review the staged result before anything goes live. The old host stays untouched until you confirm the move is clean.
Before You Decide
You don't commit to moving.
You commit to looking.
Before a single DNS record changes, we build a working clone of your current site on the SmartBirb Cloud - your content, your theme, your plugins, running exactly as they will run after the migration. You browse it. You test it. You decide.
If it isn't right, you walk away. No invoice, no hard feelings, no rollback required - because nothing moved.
Most people who see it stay. But the choice is always yours to make with full information.
This Is the Charter
No server bill surprises.
No maintenance weekends.
No backup anxiety.
