The wrong answer - chosen quickly, chosen on price, chosen because a salesperson was persuasive - surfaces months or years later, usually at the worst possible moment.
This page is the honest account of how we arrived at the SmartBirb Cloud - the infrastructure layer beneath every site we manage. It is not a marketing page. It is a two-decade audit trail.

2004 – 2009
The Shared Era
cPanel. Shared boxes. The beginning.
Like everyone, we started on shared hosting. cPanel, GoDaddy, Bluehost, HostGator. Fast to set up, cheap to run, adequate for the sites of the era. The cracks appeared as WordPress grew - a noisy neighbour on the same server could bring your site down with theirs. No isolation. No control. No real answers when something went wrong.
2009 – 2016
The DIY Era
DigitalOcean. AWS. Hetzner. Linode. Full server ownership.
Moving to VPS felt like progress. Full root access, isolated environments, configurable everything. We ran our own NGINX, tuned our own PHP-FPM, managed our own MySQL, wrote our own server hardening scripts. We learned an enormous amount. We also learned that being a WordPress operator and being a Linux sysadmin are two full-time jobs, and combining them means being mediocre at both. Every security patch, every kernel update, every failed drive was our problem - at 3am.
2016 – 2022
The Managed Era
WP Engine. Kinsta. Rocket.net. Pressable. Testing every claim.
The managed WordPress hosting market matured and we tested it seriously - not just signing up for trials, but running real client sites at real load. The infrastructure improved. The automation was real. But the fundamental product model was the same as shared hosting dressed up: aggregate as many clients as possible, automate the routine, and hope nothing catastrophic happens. Support was a ticket queue. The "managed" in managed hosting still had a hard scope boundary. The server was managed. Your WordPress was your problem.

The Deliberate Choice

After two decades of living on every tier of the hosting landscape, we set a requirement: the infrastructure beneath SmartBirb had to be enterprise-grade, philosophy-aligned, and operated by people who built WordPress hosting at actual scale - not people who copied the model. Three providers made the shortlist.

Pagely
Founded by Joshua StrebelPagely was the original premium managed WordPress host - Joshua Strebel built what the industry later tried to copy. Real enterprise infrastructure, real enterprise clients: VMware, Cisco, Warner Bros., Crate & Barrel. We have deep respect for what Strebel built and his thinking on traction and positioning has directly informed the SmartBirb model.
The disqualifier arrived in 2021: Pagely was acquired by GoDaddy. GoDaddy's acquisition history is not a story of infrastructure stewardship - it is a story of brand consolidation. The platform Strebel built may persist for years. It may not. Placing client sites on infrastructure whose roadmap is now determined by a publicly traded company optimising for acquisition value is not a risk we are willing to take. We wish Pagely well. We did not choose it.
Pantheon
WordPress + Drupal WebOpsPantheon's client roster is genuinely impressive - Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, Doctors Without Borders, Home Depot, Starbucks, McDonald's, Google. Their infrastructure is solid and their WebOps workflow model is well-designed for development teams with Git-first deployment pipelines.
The misalignment was philosophical. Pantheon is built for developers managing sites. SmartBirb is an operator managing sites on behalf of owners who should never have to think about the infrastructure. Pantheon's workflow surfaces complexity that, in our model, should remain invisible. It is an excellent tool - for a different kind of operator. We are not that operator.
WP.cloud - by Automattic
Powers WordPress.com & WPVIPAutomattic - the company behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, and Akismet - is the largest organisation in the WordPress ecosystem. WP.cloud is their infrastructure platform: the same system that powers hundreds of millions of WordPress sites on WordPress.com, and the same enterprise tier that powers WordPress VIP clients.
The alignment was immediate on three levels. First, scale without compromise - this infrastructure has been load-tested at a scale no other provider can match. Second, philosophical alignment - Automattic's commitment to the open-source WordPress project means their infrastructure priorities track the platform's actual needs, not a SaaS product roadmap. Third, freedom to operate with discipline - WP.cloud gave us the flexibility to deploy and manage the entire WordPress stack the way we believed it should be managed. The result is The Dry Dock Stack. Unlike infrastructure that constrains or assumes a traditional file-system WordPress model, WP.cloud imposed no ceiling on how deliberately we could operate.
There is no acquisition risk here. Automattic is WordPress at scale. Their incentives are structurally aligned with operating WordPress properly. That alignment is not a differentiating feature for them - it is their entire business model.
The Honest Question
"Can't I just rent this engine myself for $25 a month?"
Yes - you can. Other resellers put you on the same WP.cloud infrastructure for the price of a lunch. We will even tell you that ourselves, because you would find out anyway, and we would rather you hear it from us.
The engine was never the product. What you cannot rent for $25 is someone who watches it, hardens it, and answers when something feels wrong. The substrate is table stakes - we chose the best one available. Everything you actually pay SmartBirb for happens in the layer above it: the eyes, the judgment, and the name on the charter.

The Point
